Dodo Filigree

earrings

Pristina has several very talented silversmiths, and Dodo is one of them.  The jewelry is gorgeous and the prices are reasonable.  He had nice gift boxes as well.  Definitely worth checking out!

Walking Directions:  Starting from U.S. Embassy Bravo gate, take a right to walk down the hill to the main road (Ahmet Krasniqi).  When you get to the circle, keep to your right and walk on the overpass over the train tracks and take the first right (onto Tirana).  At the first main road, take a left onto Garibaldi.  Walk straight through the next intersection.  Dodo has a black and silver sign and is just below street level, on your right hand side.

Detari Fish Shop by Bravo Gate

If you walk down to the bottom of the hill from Bravo gate, you will see a fish shop to your right.  They sell sea fish (not just trout/trofta).  They have levrek (sea bass), shrimp, squid, salmon, dorado, etc.  You can buy it as is, have it cleaned for you, and even have it completely cooked for you!   The owner does not seem to speak English, but you can communicate with pointing and showing with fingers how many kilo you would like.

Definitely worth a try.

Prices:  $$ of $$$.  Examples:  Shrimp – 15 euro/kilo; Levrek – 10 euro/kilo.  Only 50 cents per fish to have it cooked for you!

Location:  At the bottom of the road 24 maj/Johan Gete where it intersects with Ahmet Krasniqi (in the Dragodan neighborhood).

Talens Arts, Crafts, and Office Supply

This store has just about anything you could need for any type of artistic endeavor.  There are stretched canvasses, all kinds of paints, clay, stickers, glitter, all kinds of paper, bows, ribbons, markers, glues — really, you name it.  There are also office supplies such as folders and staplers and pens.  The prices are reasonable and the quality is high.  There are three floors worth of products.  The youngest amateur to the most experienced  artist will each find something at Talens.

Walking Directions:  (Across the street behind the National Theater/Teatri Kombetar) From U.S. Embassy Bravo gate, take a left up the hill to get to the Dragodan steps, which will be on your right.  Descend the steps and cross over the main road at the bottom (Zagrebi).  Go straight, following UCK road.  Continue through the square and cross over the main road at the other side (Agim Ramadani), taking a right onto it.  Walk straight on Agim Ramadani; PanExpert will be on your left hand side.  Take a left onto this road; Talens is very shortly thereafter on your right hand side.

Zara Clothing Store

Pristina’s Zara is a short drive from the downtown area.  There are women’s and men’s clothes as well as a Zara Kids in the same building.  Prices are reasonable and styles are trendy.  You can try on clothes and they accept credit cards.

Driving Directions:  Starting from U.S. Embassy Bravo gate, go down the hill and take a right onto the main road (Ahmet Krasniqi).  Continue straight until you get to the first traffic circle.  Take the second exit option onto the small road.  Continue following this road for a few kilometers, taking it slow.  The City Hipermarket 1 shopping complex will come up on your right hand side.  Park in the large lot; Zara is on the first floor.

MiniMax Shopping Center

MiniMax is a department store with many different products.  There are electronics, jewelry, some household knick knacks, kids’ clothes and toys, women’s clothes, men’s clothes, sports clothes, and purses.  There are brands like Burberry, Chanel, and Prada.  Though they are likely not the “real deal,” the prices are very good.  There is also a restaurant/cafe on the first level.

Walking/Driving Directions:  (~15 minutes/~5 minutes)  From U.S. Embassy Bravo gate, go down the hill and take a right onto the main road (Ahmet Krasniqi).  Travel along this road, past the Maxi.  Right before you reach the traffic circle, make a hairpin right to go up the hill past the unfinished gray cement structure (Ferid Curri).  You will see MiniMax on your left; turn into the parking lot.

Shops by Te Ora e Kurrizit

Looking for some shopping with great prices?  Why not try the shops by Te Ora (the clock) in the Dardania neighborhood?  Most any taxi driver will know where you want to go if you say “Te Ora.”  Walk in under the clock pictured above, and there are dress shops, an “H&M”, lots of kids clothing stores, a few butcher shops, and even a shop where you can buy large Albanian lace doilies–all at a fraction of what you would pay at Albi Mall.

Walking Directions:  (close to Bill Clinton statue)  Starting from U.S. When the road comes to a “T,” make a right and walk toward Mother Teresa Cathedral (on Xhorxh Bush).  Right after you pass the big cathedral, take a right at that big intersection (onto Bulevardi Bill Klinton) to walk behind the back of the church.  Cross the road before or when you see the Bill Clinton statue.  Take a left after the Bill Clinton statue (onto Idris Gjilani).  Walk back until you see the white clock; go under the clock to see  the shops.

Viva Fresh

Viva Fresh has more than just groceries; it is also a department store.  There is jewelry, cosmetics, clothes, some toys, dishes, cleaning supplies, and housewares.  The meat counter is one of the best in Pristina, with fresh beef and fresh chicken breasts (amazing!).  The produce section is also very good.

There is a little indoor play area for the kids as well with a trampoline, rockers, and a slide.  There is also a coffee shop in the building.

Added plus — it is very easy to use a VAT form here as well as credit cards.
